Summary of Original Clinical Research Achievements
• Internationally recognised for discovery of beneficial effect of hypertonic saline in improving mucus clearance, lung function, quality of life and reducing respiratory exacerbations in patients with cystic fibrosis.(NEJM 2006) Hypertonic saline is now a standard treatment for cystic fibrosis, already used by 25% of US CF patients (US CFF Database 2007).despite minimal marketing and promotion by any pharmaceutical company.
• One of only two non Americans highlighted on North American Cystic Fibrosis Foundation – Expanding the Horizon of Hope: Fifty years of progress in Cystic Fibrosis. (Celebratory DVD)
• Described the beneficial effect of oxygen on exercise endurance in interstitial lung disease and respiratory muscle function in normal subjects and patients with COPD.
• Described respiratory muscle fatigue following high intensity exercise in normal subjects.
• Major research in predictors of sleep disordered breathing, early research of non-invasive ventilation during sleep, comparison of O2 versus NIV during sleep in cystic fibrosi.
• Described effect of pulmonary exacerbations in disturbing sleep and impairing neurocognitive function in cystic fibrosis
• Original description of physiological responses to upper limb exercise.
• Two major North American CF Foundation Grants, including first ever awarded outside the USA.
• Finding of widespread clonal strain of Pseudomonas aeruginosa in a number of CF clinics
which prompted review of infection control guidelines.
• A Chief Investigator in Canada –Australia collaborative study which showed that treatment of pulmonary exacerbations in Cystic Fibrosis directed by Multiple Combination Bacterial Therapy was not superior to standard physician directed therapy.(Lancet 2005).Ongoing studies in bacterial growth and antibiotic resistance in anaerobic and biofilm conditions.
